The Villa Farnesina in Rome
Description
Built on the banks of the Tiber at the beginning of the sixteenth century as the residence of the banker and patron Agostino Chigi, the Villa Farnesina is one of the most accomplished Renaissance examples of the fusion between architectural design and pictorial decoration in a private residence. During a unique artistic season, artists such as Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo, Sodoma, and Baldassarre Peruzzi brought to life an extensive decorative program spread across loggias and halls, echoing the personal story of the patron, reinterpreted through symbolic and mythological themes.
